Sue overcomes challenges to graduate course and secure a job

Sue proudly graduated with a Certificate III in Individual Support in December 2021 as part of the Skilling Queenslanders for Work (SQW) initiative, overcoming medical challenges to not only complete the course but land her first job in the disability sector.

SQW disability placement provider Multicap is thrilled that Sue has recently accepted a part-time position as a Disability Support Worker at the Multicap Old Petrie Town Hub.

Sue is the first to admit that there were some hurdles to cross at times throughout the course but says she is happy to have completed the course as planned.

“It may be that I’m an extremely determined person but being told I may not be able to do something makes it even more alluring to overcome any obstacles to prove that I can,” Sue said.

Ten months after having her daughter, Sue suffered a stroke leaving her with years of rehabilitation and medical appointments while raising her daughter together with her fabulous supportive husband.

Inspired by some friends who were enrolled in government funded training, Sue sought out training in community support with a special interest in aged care and was excited to find that Multicap’s SQW course was conveniently located for her at Petrie.

Initial conversations with Multicap’s SQW Coordinator, Louise, led to Sue enrolling in the course.

“I recall being fearful that I would not be able to manage the course, however Louise was so helpful and supportive, and I’m so pleased she convinced me to give it a go. Both Louise and the (training provider) AMC trainer’s support throughout the course was magnificent.”

Sue completed 60 hours of work experience at an aged care facility and then 60 hours of work experience at Multicap’s Aspley and Pine Rivers Hubs to discover her passion is working in disability rather than aged care.

“The Multicap placement was such a positive and uplifting experience, and it was inspiring to work with other genuinely caring Disability Support Workers. Multicap’s staff are clearly working towards the same end goal and encourage the best for customers in everything they do.

“I’m looking forward to my new career and being able to help people achieve their dreams,” she said.

In addition to working two days at Multicap, Sue volunteers at a hospital and has commenced studying a Certificate in Allied Health and hopes to be an Occupational Therapist Assistant in the future.
