$4million development underway for disability housing in Central Queensland

Construction of housing for people with high-needs disability has started and will deliver specialist affordable, accessible, and high-quality housing thanks to local disability service provider, Multicap and a grant received from the federal government via the Building Better Regions Fund.

Multicap secured Australian Government funding of $950,000 in 2020 to develop housing adjacent to its existing Jardine Street location in Rockhampton.

The investment will deliver civil works including earthworks such as 120m road widening and 70m footpaths, and two buildings to provide long-term independent living opportunities for four people with disability who have high and complex needs.

The development is responding to local demand for disability housing and adds to Multicap’s commitment to supporting locals with disability, as well as delivering job opportunities in the region.

Multicap CEO, Joanne Jessop said the housing will help people who require significant support and the highest standard of disability accommodation to live safely and independently in the community.

“This project has been in the pipeline for years so we are extremely pleased to see construction has now commenced which will support the growing regional communities in Central Queensland,” Joanne said.

“We have provided support for people with disability in Rockhampton for over 20 years and are well aware of the community need for disability housing,” she said. “We have a passion for delivering quality services and support for people and quality housing is fundamental to this.”

The two new fully accessible houses will include accommodation for staff and will be purpose-built to provide comfortable and supportive living environments to allow residents to live comfortably with increased independence.

The construction is being delivered by local business, BT Builders Qld and is expected to be completed in November 2023.

Multicap is a major provider of high-quality disability services in Rockhampton, supporting people in supported independent living units and houses, short term accommodation and at its Community Hub.
