After over 55 years living in a rural community, two brothers, who both live with mild intellectual disabilities and are completely blind due to Bardet-Biedl Syndrome, embarked on a transformative journey to Brisbane.
Their move to Multicap’s Supported Independent Living house was prompted by the need for more accessible services and a change in their living situation.
Multicap Service Leader, Dee said the move to the city was a significant change for the brothers, but over time they settled in well and now enjoy the many benefits of living in Brisbane.
“The support from the brothers’ support team was outstanding,” Dee shared. “The staff helped them with everything, from connecting to healthcare services to making sure they could access food that met their dietary needs.”
For one brother, staying active was a priority and with assistance from staff, he found a gym that suited his interests.
While the other brother, who initially preferred only walking, soon developed an interest in gym sessions and now participates in both gym workouts and swimming. Not long ago, he also went indoor skydiving, surprising himself, his family and staff, noting it was an experience he says he will never forget.
“Their confidence and independence have grown as they have adapted to and become familiar with the environment, the staff, housemates, routines and have developed an appreciation for their new surroundings,” said Dee.
Being closer to family has been another positive change of the move for the brothers. They enjoy outings, meals, and regular Sunday church services with their family, strengthening their social connections and sense of belonging.
Since settling into their new life, the brothers have also embraced a variety of new experiences, such as visits to the Gold Coast, riding the Aqua Duck, and exploring Brisbane’s sights via ferry rides and train trips.
Dee commented that one brother even ticked off his bucket list item of riding the Sling Shot at Surfers Paradise. Something he had been keen to do for several years.
For the other brother, the beach is a favourite destination, and both brothers look forward to their regular outings together. “They’re excited about more adventures and experiences to come,” said Dee.
