Candice has found her calling at Multicap’s Pine Rivers Community Hub, where she works as a Teaching Assistant for the Centre of Creative Arts (COCA) program.
Every day, Candice takes on various tasks that contribute to the smooth running of the program.
She begins her day by ensuring that everything is ready for the participants.
“I get out the books and put them on the tables,” said Candice.
These journals play a crucial role in the participants’ artistic journey.
Multicap’s COCA Program Lead, Alicia Jones noted the crucial role the journals place in the participants’ artistic journey.
“At the end of each session, we document what we did for the session,” Alicia said. “Not all of our customers are literate, so Candice will go around and support that process.”
Candice takes great pride in assisting everyone with writing and reading, making sure they feel supported.
“I help everybody with writing and reading – whatever they want,” said Candice.
Her role also extends to leading vocal warm-ups, an essential part of the creative process.
“We do vocal warm-ups like singing and tongue twisters,” Candice said.
Alicia adds, “Candice helps to ensure that everyone is prepared and focused for the session ahead.”
In addition to her work with journals and warm-ups, Candice also handles administrative tasks.
“I go on the computer, print stuff off, and then hand it to them to put in their journals,” Candice explains.
Her ability to manage these tasks has made a significant impact on the program.
“Candice’s assistance makes my job easier and makes a big difference for both the staff and the other participants,” Alicia said.
When asked what she enjoys most about being a Teaching Assistant, Candice said, “I just like helping everybody.”
Her commitment to assisting others is evident in the positive atmosphere she helps create and the team are keen to further develop her people management skills.
“Candice is really good at managing people and we’re focusing on enhancing these skills. She has already accomplished so much, and we’re excited to see where she goes next,” said Alicia.
Candice continues to fulfil her goal to support and encourage other people with disabilities to know that they can live fulfilling lives doing what they enjoy.
