Celebrating Indigenous Culture Through Art

Since the opening of Multicap’s Roma Community Hub in early 2024, Barry, a proud Darumbull Indigenous man, has found a vibrant space to express his passion for art.

Known for his intricate and stunning artworks featuring animals like snakes, Barry is not only showcasing his talent but also sharing a piece of his cultural heritage with the community.

“I love making artwork because it allows me to connect with my culture and tell stories that are important to me,” Barry said. “Every piece I create is a reflection of my identity and my respect for the land and its creatures.”

Barry’s talent has caught the attention of many at the Roma Community Hub, where he feels encouraged and supported in his artistic endeavours.

“Art is my way of communicating with the world,” he added. “It’s a way to share my passion for nature and my love for my culture. When people see my work, I hope they feel the spirit of the animals and the land.”

Multicap’s Service Manager, Aisling McMullan has been instrumental in supporting Barry on his artistic journey.

“He’s really happy with his artwork, which he’s currently trying to sell,” Aisling said.

“I’m collaborating with the Maranoa Arts Centre here in Roma to help Barry advertise his work at the local art centre early next year. It’s been wonderful to see him take such pride in his creations.”

Aisling expressed her pride in Barry’s progress, emphasising the importance of community support.

“We are dedicated to showcasing local talent and helping people like Barry connect with the broader community. It’s inspiring to see him engage with his art and the positive impact it has on his life. We want to ensure that he has all the resources he needs to succeed.”

The Roma Community Hub represents a crucial resource for people with disabilities in regional areas, fostering a sense of purpose, inclusion and community connection.

By tailoring activities to meet the needs of attendees, community hubs like Roma provide a space where community members can explore their interests, develop skills, and build lasting relationships.

“The support we provide at the Roma Community Hub is designed around each individual’s passions and needs,” Aisling said. “Barry’s journey is a perfect example of how community hubs can empower people to thrive. We’re excited to see how his artwork will resonate with others and will continue supporting him on this path.”

As Barry prepares for his upcoming exhibition, his journey is a testament to the transformative power of community engagement and the importance of platforms that celebrate diversity, creativity, and connection.

Through his art, Barry not only shares his unique voice but also inspires others to appreciate the rich cultural heritage that shapes our communities.
