Exploring Phillip Island with Multicap Getaways

The rain wasn’t enough to dampen spirits for Melbourne–based explorers who visited Phillip Island as part of Multicap’s December Getaway.

The group of five spent two nights at Ripples and Tonic, a fully accessible farm stay and home to dozens of friendly animals.

Nicole knew it would be the perfect experience for daughter Ella, who adores animals.

“Ella has anxiety and is hesitant to leave her family, but I knew the animals would get her over the line,” said Nicole.

“The farm stay had horses, goats, chickens and guinea pigs and every morning guests could feed the animals. Ella really loved that immersive experience.”

Nicole said the team at Multicap were not only supportive of Ella during the trip, but also in the lead up to it.

“They gave us as much information as possible so that Ella was prepared. It was a huge milestone in terms of her managing her anxiety better and a wonderful first trip away with an organisation.”

Multicap Support Worker, Frankie with friends Madeleine and Olivia

For fellow attendees and long–time friends Madeleine and Olivia, the trip to Phillip Island marked not only their first weekend away together, but also their first time away since the COVID-19 pandemic.

Multicap Support Worker, Tess said it was an overwhelmingly positive experience.

“Having supported Madeleine and Olivia independently, it was great to see them have such a fantastic time together,” said Tess.

“They were open to experiencing every available opportunity and brought fun to all of the activities – even domestic ones like doing the dishes.”

Despite the wet weather, the group spent plenty of time exploring the grounds, fitted out with quaint cottages, fruit trees and an outdoor spa.

Nicole said the December Getaway was so successful, she has organised for Ella to visit Sovereign Hill with Multicap in March.

“I am proud that she was able to step out of her comfort zone and trust in the people around her to keep her safe,” said Nicole.

“To see her achieve that and be happy was amazing.”

Two-night Getaways for up to six participants offer respite to help develop independent living skills while visiting various locations surrounding Melbourne.
