Fiona Haynes has been a driving force behind Monte Lupo Arts since 2000, shaping it into the renowned creative hub it is today.

Starting as a potter, Fiona honed her craft on the wheel before stepping into a leadership role, expanding the studio’s reach and impact.

Reflecting on the studio’s humble beginnings, Fiona said the changes have been significant.

“When I first started, the studio was just a small room inside the coffee shop,” Fiona said. “Now, we have an amazing space with great equipment, and it’s a fantastic place to create.”

Fiona’s passion for art led her to study Fine Art at QCA, later working in a detention centre teaching art to young people.

She joined Monte Lupo part-time before transitioning to a full-time role, dedicated to creating opportunities for artists with disabilities.

With Fiona’s guidance and leadership, Monte Lupo Arts has grown from a small studio into a recognised art studio, with its work showcased at festivals and galleries.

As the studio grew, Multicap was able to provide more employment opportunities to artists with disability, ensuring everyone contributes meaningfully to each piece produced.

“We’re great at breaking up tasks so that everyone plays a role in the bigger picture,” Fiona said. “Each piece of art involves multiple hands from sculpting to painting to mosaicking. That’s what makes it special.”

“Everyone plays a part, and that’s so satisfying knowing that everyone is important and equal.”

Fiona values the collaborative spirit within Multicap, knowing she can rely on various departments for support.

“Multicap is a great place to work because everyone shares the same vision for the people we support,” she said.

Among her proudest achievements is Monte Lupo Art’s participation in SWELL 2024, which led to an invitation to showcase at the Woodford Folk Festival.

“Every exhibition feels better than the last. I love the process of brainstorming, creating, setting up, and then moving on to the next challenge.”

Looking ahead, Fiona hopes to expand workshops, create larger-scale works, and showcase Monte Lupo Arts artists on a national and international stage.

“I’d love to see Monte Lupo selling work worldwide and our artists showcased on the world stage,” Fiona said.

After 25 years, Fiona remains as passionate as ever.

“I love my job—being creative, working with a great team, and seeing our work improve all the time.

“The best part is stepping back and saying, ‘Wow, that was made at Monte Lupo,’ knowing up to 20 people played a role. That’s what I love: the collaboration, the teamwork, and making something truly special together.”
