Murray is a middle-aged man with an intellectual disability and was a truck driver for more than 30 years. Earlier this year, he found himself in an unfortunate position of being homeless and having all of his possessions sold.
Multicap Service Leader, Bev Visona recalls the day that Murray moved into the new purpose-built apartments and was proud to offer the support Murray needed.
“He literally moved in with only the clothes on his back,” she said.
“Multicap purchased furniture on his behalf, and he has been proudly making fortnightly repayments since. Many of the staff have personally donated many of his household goods to make the apartment feel like home,” said Bev.
Murray has lived at the Carina Apartments for the past five months in a one-bedroom apartment, receiving in-home support Monday to Friday and on Saturday.
Murray is thankful for the opportunity and emphasises that he has found more than a home at Carina Apartments.
“I like the staff the best about living here, I consider them my family now. I have made friends and often pop over to their apartments for BBQs on the balcony.
“Everyone has been very welcoming and I really appreciated receiving hampers and hot meals from Citipointe Foodcare.
“I’m proud to purchase the furniture so that it is mine and no one can take it off me. I own the fridge, microwave and couches now,” he said.
Being a big cricket fan, Carina Apartments has been convenient for Murray as he now regularly enjoys watching the matches held across the road at the Clem Jones Centre.
“I’m especially spoilt being able to watch the live cricket across the road. I don’t need to watch cricket on TV anymore.”
Murray is still becoming familiar with his surroundings in Carina but acknowledges that being close to Carindale Shopping Centre is convenient.
“I’ve had four heart attacks and I’m proud to say I’ve lost 38kgs so any excuse to move is important. When I visit the shops with my support worker, we walk from one end of the shopping centre to the other end for fitness,” said Murray.
