When aspiring paramedic, Jade, began her student placement with Multicap she never anticipated how transformative the experience would be.
As a second-year paramedic student at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Jade is one of the first students to benefit from a new placement opportunity with Multicap.
The partnership between QUT and Multicap aims to provide future paramedics with vital experience working with people with disabilities, enhancing their clinical skills and community engagement.
Students engage in hands-on placements at community hubs and commercial sites across Queensland, working alongside experienced support workers who assist people with disabilities.
Jade was based at Multicap’s Makeables site in Tingalpa and worked with assisted employees and job coaches.
“I wasn’t sure what to expect on my first day but it quickly became clear that the experience would be far more than just fulfilling a requirement for my second year of paramedicine,” said Jade.
“I spent the whole day chatting with everyone while working alongside them and observing the job coaches in action.”
Jade’s main takeaway from the experience was appreciating everyone’s individuality.
“I didn’t know the specific disabilities of those around me, and I didn’t need to,” she said. “The people I was working with weren’t defined by their disabilities; they were just people to me.”
Jade is planning to work in medicine or emergency healthcare after her studies, and the experience has given her the confidence to communicate and engage with anyone.
“I will be working with people with disability in whichever medical field I undertake, so this was such a valuable experience,” she said.
“After 45 hours of working with the amazing team at Makeables, I feel like I can talk to anyone and everyone.”
“I would 100% recommend a placement with Multicap.”
Multicap’s employment business, Makeables provides meaningful work to people with disability, allowing them to gain transferable experience in production and distribution.
