Specialised Behaviour Support Services
Positive Behaviour Support
We work collaboratively with the person and their support networks to develop a positive behaviour support plan, and staff are trained to implement the plan and improve the person’s quality of life.
What is Positive Behaviour Support?
Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) is the most recognised and effective approach to minimise the impact of concerning behaviour and improve quality of life.
It is provided through consultation with the person, their family, support network, and other allied health professionals. Through an assessment of the behaviour, an evidence-based plan is developed to meet the underlying need behind the behaviour and manage the behaviour effectively when it does occur. We then train the person’s support team on the implementation of the plan. In doing so, we aim to reduce challenging behaviours which cause harm to self or others and increase the person’s skills and community participation.
If necessary, clinical oversight can be provided to ensure plans continue to be effective.
We believe that behaviours of concern, or challenging behaviours, stem from an underlying unmet need. We work to understand and meet this need, and to reduce or eliminate practices that limit a person’s human rights and freedom.
