Leading disability services provider, Multicap is delivering purpose-built housing for a valued customer in Capalaba with the official opening of its latest disability accommodation.
With construction now complete on a single occupant dwelling build to exceed robust standards on acreage in Capalaba, Multicap will provide long–term, independent living opportunities for a long-term customer with high needs, Tommy.
Multicap Chair, Angela Tillmanns said the development, initiated 18 months ago, is a testament to the collaborative efforts of Queensland Health, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), Multicap, Allinto, Arbourwell and Tommy’s parents.
“This purpose-built home for Tommy underscores Multicap’s commitment to providing quality support and accommodation for people with high and complex needs,” said Angela.
“Multicap’s critical support services and positive behaviour support teams were closely involved in the design and build journey, making sure that Tommy was the centre of all decision-making.
“We are incredibly proud to provide a supportive and compassionate environment tailored to Tommy’s specific needs, delivering on our promise to the people we serve in all ways, always,” she said.
The new two-bedroom home features rounded edges on walls and benchtops, modified sensory room, automated block out blinds, ducted air-conditioning, wide hallways and spacious living areas – all planned with Tommy’s needs in mind.
Tommy started his journey with Multicap in 2021 and has been receiving wrap-around supports as a sole resident in a five-bedroom transitional home at Multicap’s campus in Eight Mile Plains.
Prior to 2021, Tommy was in out of care from service providers and hospitals, and eventually his life was restricted to the four walls of a hospital room to protect himself and others.
Multicap’s Manager Complex Behaviour, Kim Whakatau said when Tommy came into our care, the words people used to describe Tommy were sad.
“People used to say he was complex and too difficult but that is not who Tommy is – he is a fun-loving 22-year-old man who just wants to live his best life,” said Kim.
Multicap’s dedicated teams have worked together to develop a support plan to help manage Tommy’s behaviours and he now enjoys daily outings to local attractions, parks, beaches and farm visits.
Multicap secured funding from Queensland Health and the NDIS to support the development of Tommy’s new home.
Construction was delivered by local builders, Jatec Construction and designed by Think Tank Architects.
Multicap is a leading provider of high-quality disability services in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria, providing opportunities for almost 2000 people through an extensive range of services.
