Sixteen-year-old Remi, has wrapped up his second round of work experience at Monte Lupo Café and he’s summed it up perfectly in his own words: “All in a day’s work.”

What started with a conversation over coffee at Monte Lupo’s Banyo café quickly turned into a meaningful opportunity for Remi to explore his passion for food and build workplace skills in a welcoming environment.

Remi’s passion for cooking began at home, cooking dinners with his parents and Support Workers.

“I like cooking! I often cook at home with my dad, last night we made silverbeet dhal,” said Remi.

During his time at Monte Lupo Cafe, Remi experienced various hospitality tasks such as taking customer orders and operating the EFTPOS machine to preparing food, managing the till, washing dishes and baking menu favourites including protein balls, sausage rolls and cookies.

He said the experience “upped my anti”, proudly listing off the new skills he’s learned, “I talked to people at the counter, used the till, helped make sausage rolls and protein balls. The chocolate protein balls are my favourite!”

Remi also discussed his excitement about making new friendships during his time at Monte Lupo Cafe.

“I made friends with one of the other workers. That was the best part about my time at Monte Lupo,” said Remi.

Multicap’s Service Leader at the Banyo site, Benjamin said having Remi on the team was a great experience.

“It has been a pleasure having Remi join the team. Remi is a very confident and capable young man, who has been a real asset at the Cafe,” said Ben.

He also highlighted the importance of offering hands-on learning opportunities.

“It is important as it gives real-life experience to those that are interested or studying the industry. It also shows the career opportunities available within our organisation, and can spark recruitment possibilities when they finish school,” said Ben.

Ben shared that work experience placements like Remi’s help young people grow and they plan to offer more in future.

“I witnessed significant growth in Remi’s skill base and confidence. We are teaming up with the local high school so that more students can benefit from the experience,” said Ben.

From building practical skills and friendships to boosting his confidence, Remi’s time at the Monte Lupo Cafe has laid a strong foundation for his future.

Now, with his sights on obtaining a chef or construction apprenticeship, this motivated teen is ready for what’s next with purpose, positivity, and his signature saying: “All in a day’s work.”
