Embracing green thumbs with more space to enrich lives

People with disability are taking in the fresh air with more garden activities, thanks to a recent expansion of an outdoor area at Multicap’s Community Hub in Toowoomba.

The new $100,000 outdoor area has doubled the size of the hub and will support more ‘green thumb’ activities thanks to local disability service provider, Multicap and a grant received from the Queensland government’s Gambling Community Benefit Fund.

Multicap secured Queensland government funding of $35,000 to expand the West Street location in Toowoomba.

Toowoomba Hub hosts a wide range of social experiences and activities including day trips, sport, arts and craft, music, trivia, discos, singing, and now even more gardening.

Multicap’s Regional Manager, Pam Middleton said the opportunities for gardening activities are endless and customers are going to thrive in the new space.

“We have some customers that are passionate gardeners, and they are excited to utilise the space for preparing pot plants and tending to them – which also benefits the other customers who will have a lovely outdoor area with plenty of greenery,” said Pam.

“I would love to see our green thumb program expand into a project where we constantly add to a pottery collection with beautiful blooming plants ready for this year’s Carnival of Flowers.

“Creating an opportunity like this with the people we support, contributes to their sense of purpose, and proud achievements that are enjoyed at every step of the journey.”

The community hub expansion adds to Multicap’s commitment to supporting locals with disability and providing an enjoyable space for activities offered at the hub.

Multicap CEO, Joanne Jessop said the expansion will provide additional space for people to socialise and have even more fun at the hub.

“Our Toowoomba Hub is a hidden gem and provides a beautiful space for connecting with others and having fun while getting creative or learning new skills,” Joanne said.

“We have provided support for people with disability in Toowoomba for over 15 years and have a passion for delivering quality services that enhance their lives every day.

“We’re pleased to officially open the new area with a celebration for our customers, families and friends.”

The construction was delivered by local business, Vjas Building and was completed in February 2023.

Multicap is a leading provider of high-quality disability services in Toowoomba, supporting people in supported independent houses, short term accommodation and at its Community Hub.
