Disability support work is everything and more that Joel had hoped it would be when he made the switch from a corporate career.

The former insurance officer says he couldn’t be happier with his career as a disability support worker with Multicap.

“I feel like I’ve found my purpose,” the 32-year-old said. “I definitely made the right move – I love what I do now and look forward to coming to work every day. I couldn’t ask for anything better.”

With a degree in IT under his belt, Joel says he ‘fell into’ insurance in his early 20s but found himself very stressed and wanting work that better aligned with his values.

“I wanted to do something that was benefiting the world and making a difference in people’s lives,” he said. “When I came across Multicap, I knew straight away that was what I wanted to do.”

While Joel was finishing his Certificate III in Individual Support, he ‘demanded’ a placement at Multicap’s Eight Mile Plains Hub, and that was the beginning of what he hopes will be a long career with the organisation.

In the three years since, Joel has worked in the school holiday program, in-home support, Avegates and Nudgee Hub, where he now spends four days a week supporting customers.

Not only does Joel drive customers to and from the Hub each day, he also spends the day supporting them to achieve their goals, learn valuable skills and have fun.

“I love knowing that I’m helping someone and letting them live their lives and have experiences they might now otherwise have,” he said. “It’s an amazing feeling to see people with disability growing and achieving their goals.”

While Joel says he’s thoroughly enjoying his job, he would like to study more so he can offer even greater supports to the people he supports.

“I want to continue working with people with disability but I am interested in studying some short courses to increase my skills so I can support them in different ways.”

Joel says the hardest part of the job is seeing people with disability being treated unkindly by strangers.

“I would like to see people be more understanding and accepting of people with disability. Just be kind and compassionate.”
