Multicap hosted an Open Day last week to showcase a beautiful Short Term Accommodation (STA) home located at Mt Ommaney designed for people with disability to enjoy a relaxed weekend away or fun-filled holiday.

Approximately 30 people attended the open day and guests were able to tour the accommodation, enjoy some refreshments and participate in activities organised by Multicap Centre of Creative Arts staff.

Stakeholder Engagement Manager, Cassie Ross, said the open day provided an opportunity for customers and their families, as well referrers such as Support Coordinators, to experience the accommodation and service provided in an informal setting.

“This type of accommodation was formerly known as respite, but we want people to know that it is so much more,” Cassie said. “We have designed our STA to allow our guests to make the experience whatever they want it to be.

“Our activity calendar offers a variety of options to suit everyone – from a weekend away involving sports, games, arts or concerts to themed holidays for the thrill seeker or a relaxed winter escape.

“When guests arrive at the accommodation, they will be greeted by staff and offered an opportunity to plan their activities during the stay before settling them into their room.

The open day featured mocktails and cupcakes on arrival and guest speaker, Shane from Multicap’s Self-Advocacy Program.

Originally from Melbourne, Shane has been a Multicap customer for the past five years and is a self-advocacy founding member now leading the program at Multicap’s Capalaba Hub. One of Shane’s personal self-advocacy goals for 2022 is to do more public speaking events.

In his speech, Shane spoke about how Multicap has impacted his life and said that he was thankful for the speaking opportunity.

“I was a bit nervous but I think the speech went really well. It was awesome meeting other people at the Open Day.

“I like the set up at Mt Ommaney and the rooms. It’s a very nice place with a big kitchen and nice people. I would recommend it to my friends,” Shane said.

The Mt Ommaney accommodation is currently tenanted by two customers who have recently moved from hospital and are awaiting long term accommodation and Cassie said she is thrilled to see the customers enjoying their stay.

“It was extremely rewarding to witness how happy the customers are in their new environment since onboarding them into our services,” she said.

The accommodation offers four customer bedrooms, a staff bedroom for 24-hour support, media room, large outdoor entertaining room and all conveniently located 15 minutes from the Brisbane CBD.
