At 22 years of age, Chloe Normoyle is already making strides in the disability industry as a disability support worker.
Based in Emerald, Chloe is taking the next steps in her career by expanding her knowledge through Multicap’s traineeship program.
The program covers a range of topics, from individualised support to infection control.
Chloe said the regular sessions are helping to keep her on track.
“Once a month or twice a month we have an online session and complete training modules”, Chloe said. “I feel like it’s helped me a lot,” she said.
“I’m learning so much that I wouldn’t normally pickup straight away and it outlines how to better care for the people I support.”
Last year Chloe was nominated for the an award at the annual Staff Excellence Awards (photo) for her outstanding support work.
For Chloe, it comes naturally to be passionate about supporting others.
“I like helping people – it is good to go home at the end of the day and feel like you’ve made a difference”, Chloe said.
“The traineeship program is helping me achieve this and help look after people the best that I can.”
Just two months after starting the program, Chloe is starting to see positive results for both her and the people she supports.
“We have an eight-year-old who receives community access support and when we first started supporting him, he was very shy, mostly due to a visual impairment. Recently, he’s been showing more excitement and is chatty, finally coming out of his shell,” she said.
The traineeship program includes 15 sessions which take place over 12-months and Chloe recommends to traineeship to others.
“I would say give it a go. It is very helpful and it might help others find something that they are specifically good at.
“I was surprised when I started by how much I enjoyed it and how fun it is to come to work.”
The traineeship program allows staff to achieve additional qualifications to support their career in the disability industry and is available to permanent staff aged under 25 years.
