$4 million disability housing development officially opens in Central Queensland

Multicap has delivered affordable, specialist housing in Rockhampton with the official opening of its high needs disability accommodation.

With construction now complete on two fully accessible homes adjacent to its existing Jardine Street location, Multicap will provide long–term, independent living opportunities for four people with high needs disability.

Multicap Group Chief Executive Officer, Joanne Jessop said the development addresses demand for local disability housing and underscores Multicap’s commitment to providing quality support for people with high and complex needs.

“These homes will allow individuals who require significant support to live comfortably, safely and independently in the community,” said Joanne.

“We are proud to support growing regional communities in Central Queensland and know that developing quality housing for people with disability is fundamental to this.”

Construction of the new housing was completed in February 2024 and on 29 April 2024 Senator Nita Green cut the ribbon to formally mark the opening.

The two–bedroom homes are purpose–built to provide a comfortable living environment for residents, like siblings Josh and Amanda who have been supported by Multicap since 2021.

The pair have been enjoying community access support services, Community Hub activities, social experiences and have embraced their transition into supported independent living.

Joanne said she was excited to watch Josh and Amanda continue to grow and thrive with the support of Multicap.

“Our new residents, Josh and Amanda will be close to our suite of community services and enjoy living in a spacious, fully accessible home,” said Joanne.

“Multicap is pleased to provide these wonderful siblings with the support they need to live a safe and happy life together. It is heartwarming to already see them laughing, engaging with staff and embracing their new home.”

Multicap secured federal funding of $950,000 for the Jardine Street development in 2020, and in addition to housing the investment delivered civil works such as 120–metre road widening and 70–metre footpaths.

Construction was delivered by local business, BT Builders Qld and provided employment for 10 full–time employees.

Multicap is a leading provider of high quality disability services in Rockhampton, supporting people through supported independent living, short term accommodation and at its Community Hub.

Currently, Multicap supports over 140 people in the region and employs a local workforce of 165 individuals.

Once all new residents at Jardine Street are confirmed and their needs assessed, Multicap expects to employ up to 15 additional full–time Support Workers in ongoing employment at this service.
