From banking to Support Work: Yetunde’s inspiring journey with Multicap

Despite forging a successful career in the banking industry, Yetunde was drawn to the idea of working with people in need and dreamed of becoming a social worker.

In 2018, she made the life–changing move from Nigeria to Australia and commenced work as a Disability Support Worker with Multicap.

The role saw her develop a strong understanding of customer needs and sparked a desire to advance her career even further.

“I was interested in building and coordinating customer plans,” said Yetunde.

“I wanted to take a holistic approach to their needs.”

Having already completed a Bachelor of Sociology and Master of Public and International Affairs, Yetunde began a Master of Social Work at Griffith University.

She was offered a placement with Multicap’s Positive Behaviour Support Team through the Early Career Clinician Program as a secondment to complete her degree, which she describes as a turning point in her career.

Yetunde rose to the challenge, and by the end of her placement was managing a case load of eight customers.

She puts much of her success down to the support and supervision she received from other members of the team.

“Not only do I have a main supervisor, but as a group of practitioners, we continually support and challenge each other’s practices to ensure the best results for our customers,” said Yetunde.

“I am constantly learning new things.”

Multicap Behaviour Support Practice Senior Manager, Sarah Hutchison said she was pleased to see the Early Career Clinician program delivering results.

“We really value the contributions of all of our team members, no matter how far into their career they are,” said Sarah.

“We have opportunities available for people currently studying a Diploma, Bachelor Degree or Masters in Allied Health who are looking for a rewarding job.”

Yetunde successfully applied for a permanent position as a Positive Behaviour Support Practitioner at the end of her placement in July.

She said the new role allows her to fulfill her passion for making a meaningful impact on the lives of people living with disability.
